It's a well-known stereotype: the excessively orderly Pilates teacher with a place for everything and everything in its place.
The truth is, all Pilates teachers are not made the same when it comes to organization, but good habits can be learned. And though it may seem fussy, being meticulous in the studio can save a lot of time and stress and ensure safety for everyone.
Here are a few organizational tips for tapping into your inner neat freak and making the most of your Pilates studio space:
Provide cubbies for your clients' personal belongings, including shoes, bags and cell phones. Dedicated storage space serves as both a convenience for your clients and as a safety measure for the studio. Keeping things out of the way minimizes potential trips and falls, especially if you teach group classes or have many students coming in at once. As a bonus, you can use the extra surface area for retail or seating.
Wicker or woven, linen or lined, never underestimate the multitude of uses for baskets and bins. Store small Pilates props like pillows, balls, and grip swatches in small storage bins that can be tucked away in cabinets, in the well of the Reformer, or under the Cadillac.
When storing props, avoid throwing them willy-nilly into a bin. Line up and stack items so you can always see what's in the basket, and you won't be fumbling for your prop while your client is lying prone on the Long Box or the Cadillac.
Wall racks can hold foam rollers, Pilates Circles - even Fitness Balls. The more you rack, the more floor space you free up. If you live in a colder climate, this may be obvious, but offering a dedicated spot to hang jackets and coats can be a huge space saver - and a nice customer service touch as well.
With a few simple organizing strategies, everyone can create the perfectly appointed Pilates studio.
